Beer Title Card - Nick Drinks Blog

One of my readers (there is one that one, that was the first piece of exciting news) reached out to me about Gluten-Free Beers. Personally, I have had no experience with the category. I have had a need to. If you are a Coeliac, you don’t have a choice unless you want to spend the night in agony.  So what the heck. We got a crew together to taste 12 beers. 11 can be found at Holiday Market in Royal Oak, MI and the remainder (Brunehaut) is a special order. This was brought to the party by our Gluten-Free specialist, Ryan. It was saved for last. The remainder of our crew was myself and two notable beer connoisseurs, Brad & Russ.

Social Media - Nick Drinks Blog

All of us are fans of Untappd, which is a mobile app for tracking and exploring beers. You can also win badges (like Foursquare). If you tagged all 12 beers, you would get at least one level in Land of the Free. While we initially thought this was a Gluten-Free badge, it was actually for American Made Beers. No Gluten-Free Badge in the app, bummer.

Cheers - Nick Drinks Blog

Cheers! I asked the group to rate them on if you would order them in a bar from 1-10 (1 no to 10 yes).  Tasting notes were kept for each of the beers and I’ll present the winners below. Gluten is a key part in beer and it makes for a trickier process to make a good balanced beer with out it.  There were some winners and a lot of losers.  Refer to the first graphic for pictures of the beer bottles.

#1: Estrella Damm Daura

Our Average Rating (1-10): 7
Notes: Nick: Belgian smell. Taste was bitter tart with a hint of sweet and sour. Good body. Consistent taste start to finish. Ryan: Sweet nose, molasses, grains, cereals and sweet.  Brad: Tastes like a mild blonde but true to flavor. Mild body like a small blonde. Russ: Light, consistent, mild blonde. Holds throughout. Not bad.

Conclusion:
We liked the Brunehaut but it’s really hard to find in stores and has a steep price point. The Omission Pale Ale (not the Lager) is a good value and a great taste. Both the Dry Hopped Lager from Green’s and the Glutenator from EPIC were good but not worth the price, in our opinion. The easier to find beers were that interesting or down right awful. It pays to hunt out the harder to get stuff.

Set-Up - Nick Drinks Blog

How to Host a Beer Tasting:

A beer tasting is a fun event to do with a group of friends. Pick a theme and have everyone bring 3 of their favorite bottles within that theme. Also, the host can bring all the bottles to the event. Have some basic snacks for the tasting chips and crackers work good between beers. Provide each setting with a tasting glass, dump bucket, water glass and water pitcher. A sheet for notes and a menu of beers is an added plus. Don’t forget pencils and bottle openers.l

Oddka Flavors - Nick Drinks Blog

There is a new flavored vodka on the market (groan from the audience). I know what you are thinking. Do we need another flavored vodka? We don’t. However, Oddka Vodka is doing something different is exploring some creative and dynamic flavors. Full disclosure, the marketing team reach out to me for help in some content production for the launch. They sent me the tasting pack (shown below) but I did decline the financial contribution. The team was extremely helpful in answering questions and setting-up a Q&A with a mixologist.

Oddka Tasting - Nick Drinks Blog

I recruited a few of The Oakland bartenders to help with the sampling. Below are the notes we had about each flavor.  They also sell an unflavored vodka but it didn’t see it for sale in my area.

Electricity: Everyone was curious about this one. It smells like blue, if blue had a smell. We didn’t really get a berry smell just blue. The taste is acidic and a bit harsh. It’s very assertive. After the fact, we figured out that this was supposed to taste like licking a 9 volt battery. I picked up some batteries but haven’t had a chance to compare. Stay tuned. This could be used as a shock ingredient (no pun intended) but I wouldn’t use it as something for it’s flavor.

Apple Pie: The smell of this is quite yummy. It has a dessert feel. The taste however is disappointing. The sweet comes through and a bit of the caramel but the salt isn’t there. You could probably doctor that up yourself but missing one of the three flavors seems disappointing.

Wasabi: This was our favorite. The smell is pretty mild and you don’t catch the spice off the bat. The taste does offer some spice but could be 10 times more. Our feeling was this would get lost in a cocktail especially a Bloody Mary as recommended.

Salted Caramel Popcorn: This one has a good nose. It was sweet and had a bit of toasted flavors and the taste was about the same. What it didn’t have was the salt flavor. We guess you could add that yourself.

Fresh Cut Grass: This was the worst one. It had a nose of cut grass but it smelled like it was sitting in the clippings bag for a bit and was starting to decay. The taste was very similar. The group was not impressed with this and moved on pretty quickly.

The Oddka Team asked if I wanted to do a video for the product. I did some research and found this one. Since this group pretty much nailed it, I opted for something else.

Paper Wit Oddoski - Nick Drinks Blog

Wit Oddoski is their mascot. If you watch the above video, you get a feel for what he is. I thought it would be neat to make him into a puppet. Here is the file, if you want to make your own. It was fun to build. I just added some piano wire to operate him with.

Help from Chaz - Nick Drinks Blog

We tired to get an interview set-up with one of their mixologists but the timing didn’t work out.  He did answer a few questions through email. Unfortunately, the responses weren’t exactly what I was looking for. We might try to connect again and if so, I’ll follow-up with the result.

I want to thank The Oakland Bartenders (Kaytee, Chas & Shane) for help with tasting. Chas can be seen here expertly operating Wit.
