Rare Booze: Balvenie Tun 1401

My Dad is a huge scotch fan and I have inherited a bit of it. My go to is Balvenie. It’s single malt, priced reasonably (not cheap, mind you) and not over-powering. I’m growing to like the stronger scotches but it has taken a few years. There are some rare goodies that each of the major scotch makers come out with on occasion. Drinkhacker.com, this morning, reported on a limited edition variety called Tun 1401.

This special release of Balvenie is exclusive to the U.S., a vatting of ten “treasures” from Balvenie’s Warehouse 24. There are no detailed notes on how old each of these casks is — the youngest is from 1989 and the oldest is from 1967 — but seven come from traditional whisky casks and three from sherry butts. A tun is a rather large vat that holds up to 2000 liters of liquid, used primarily as a “marrying” vessel. And that’s what we have here: Ten old distillates put together to create a whisky that can never be repeated.

It’s on the higher end of what I would probably pay for a scotch at $250 but maybe with 5-8 friends we could have a scotch tasting party.

The review looks good. I couldn’t find more info on Balveine’s site but if I do, I’ll update the post.  Check out the whole article from Drink Hacker here.
